Jenkintown administrators say varsity football may be unviable this season due to low roster

Administrators told the March 9 work session that the Jenkintown varsity football program does not currently have a safe roster size and that the administrative recommendation was not to field a season unless viable options are found.

Why it matters: A decision affects students’ extracurricular opportunities and carries safety implications when small rosters require players to play extended minutes.

District staff described outreach to families and coaches and said Coach Cawley will join a March 20 meeting to discuss recruitment and retention. The presenter explained the administrative recommendation: “at this point in time, the recommendation from the administrative team…is that we do not have enough players to play a season,” and added that staff are not closing the door and will continue exploring all options with boosters and families.

Administrators cited roster counts (district staff referenced about 17 players expressing interest at the time of the meeting) and noted past games where small rosters led to heavy player use; staff said research indicates athletes on very small teams can have higher injury risk due to playing more downs. A meeting with coaches and boosters was scheduled to continue efforts to reach a viable roster.

Public response: Board members and parents were engaged in the discussion; a parent at the public comment portion thanked staff for how the district handled the situation and said the forthcoming meeting would be emotional but important for students and families.

Next steps: The district will hold additional meetings with coaches, families and booster club representatives to determine whether a safe roster can be achieved and will report back to the board.
