Big Hollow SD 38 to charge families for 2026 summer enrichment; board approves 2026–27 school fees

The Big Hollow SD 38 Board of Education approved the district’s 2026–27 school fees and heard a staff update that the district will charge families for the 2026 summer enrichment program after losing a grant.

The superintendent told the board the district no longer has a grant to fund the summer program and that fees will be charged to families to operate the enrichment classes, with the goal of making the program close to break-even. "We don't we no longer have a grant that can fund this program for us. So we are going to have to charge our families for the summer enrichment classes this year," the superintendent said. Staff said a flyer describing the program and fees will go out to parents imminently.

Board members asked whether PE uniform charges are applied to all students and whether the registration form automatically includes optional fees. The superintendent said PE uniforms are optional and staff will confirm whether the registration form auto-adds optional items. On the subject of unpaid registration fees, staff said students who have not paid registration fees can be restricted from participating in athletics; the district sends notices and, after the school year ends, may send unpaid balances to collections.

The meeting also clarified technology insurance for student Chromebooks: a $15 charge was referenced for the insurance that helps cover repair or breakage costs. When asked for the amount, a participant identified as Matt stated, "15 bucks. $15." The superintendent said the district cannot withhold Chromebooks under current law but can require the insurance fee or charge for damage.

A motion to approve the school fees for 2026–27 was made and approved by voice vote.

The board also reviewed calendar items and recognized students of the month before adjourning; next regular meeting is scheduled for April 13, 2026.
