Maryanne Sutland, principal of West Park Elementary, presented a district board update on March 25 that emphasized the school’s student supports and community programs.
Sutland told trustees West Park serves kindergarten through fifth grade and reported roughly 235 students enrolled. She said about 47% of the student body qualifies for free or reduced-price lunch, allowing the school to operate a schoolwide Title I program; according to Sutland, that enables targeted reading and math services for students. Sutland provided program counts: 27 students in English-language services, 37 students receiving special-education services and a speech-language pathologist caseload she described to the board as 47 students (including some private-school students on the caseload).
"I'm the principal at West Park," Sutland said during her presentation, and she told trustees the staff roster includes classroom teachers, special-education personnel, Title I aides and several shared specialists. She also showed short videos of students talking about assemblies, the school playground and events such as a barn dance, music instruction and an all-day fifth-grade field trip. The presentation noted a large proportion of students — about 212 of 235 — are on individualized learning paths, a number Sutland said is about 7 percentage points higher than the same time last year.
Trustees asked clarifying questions about staffing and shared services; Sutland described how some specialists are shared across the district and how external contractors supplement services for higher-need students. The principal characterized West Park as a culturally and socioeconomically diverse school that brings together rural students and students connected to the nearby university.
The presentation was primarily informational; the board did not take formal action on school staffing or program changes during the meeting. Staff indicated more reporting and a possible future board presentation could follow as programming and staffing needs are assessed.
