During the March 16 meeting public comment period, resident Kerry Supro asked Hewitt council to review a proposal to build a small Indonesian culture center on a half‑acre parcel near Spring Valley Road and Old Temple. Supro said she and collaborators purchased the property and seek rezoning from residential to commercial with a variance to allow a caretaker living on the premises.
Supro introduced herself as a long‑time local resident who emigrated from Indonesia in 1979 and later served in the U.S. Army. She told the council she had already met with the city manager and permitting staff and provided a written proposal for council members to review. Supro said she was not asking for a full presentation during the five‑minute public comment period but asked council and staff to review the packet she had left for them.
A council member asked whether the request was for mixed residential/commercial use; Supro replied that the plan is commercial with a variance for an on‑site caretaker residence. Staff indicated the proposal and supporting materials would be reviewed by the appropriate departments.
Because this was a public comment, the council did not act on the request during the meeting. Staff will handle preliminary routing and zoning review according to established permitting processes if the applicant pursues a formal rezoning or variance application.
