CRA approves Rossi Park sunshade design and placement within $250,000 allocation

The Community Redevelopment Agency voted unanimously March 25 to approve the revised design and placement for the Rossi Park sunshade project within the previously authorized $250,000.
City representative Bill Ackles, who presented the item, said the design changes reposition shades to border the splash pad and in front of — but not obstructing — the stage. “This is going to allow for the blockage of the sun later in the afternoon,” Ackles said, adding that the bottom of the shade will sit about 10 feet above the ground so it will not block performances.
Ackles told the board that by combining the Rossi Park work with replacement of three exercise-pad covers the city was able to keep costs under the $250,000 authorization and secure further reductions from contractors. He estimated individual Rossi Park shade elements were “right around the $28,000 range” and said the exercise-pad replacements reduced to about $39,000 in the latest pricing. Staff said the exercise-pad replacements could begin in mid-April and the Rossi Park work is expected to be completed before the end of June so the installation will be in place for Fourth of July events.
Board member Miss Coker asked whether the project would require closing the entire park for construction or only a partial closure; Ackles said some excavation and footers are required and portions of the park may be a construction site at times. Miss Moore asked staff to coordinate public notice with Miss Shadik so scheduled events and park users are informed; staff said they will post notices and update the city website and on-site signage.
Miss Coker moved to approve the revised design and placement as requested by city administration within the previously authorized funding amount of $250,000; Miss Moore seconded. The motion passed unanimously.
Next steps: staff will submit required permits to the City of Bradenton and confirm contractor schedules; the board requested advance public notice if park areas will be temporarily closed.
