The Ouachita Parish School Board presentation recognized winners of the district’s Building Bridges grants, a classroom-level program supported by Pattern Energy, Southern Spirit Transmission and a private donor that awards up to $500 per project.
Miss Alen Smith announced 11 winners across grade levels and described each project’s classroom impact: Lindsay Spillers (Central Elementary) received funding for an oral-reading engagement project; Misty Holyfield (project could not be present due to a book fair) was recognized for outdoor literacy hammocks; Lindsay Reynolds (Robinson Elementary) won for a hands-on rocks-and-minerals instructional kit; Devon Matzah (Shady Grove Elementary) received funding for a local-environmental-history project; Crystal McBride (Calhoun Middle) for a school entrance flower-bed horticulture project; Kristen Lewis (Riser Middle) for math-engagement materials; Virginia Coun (West Middle School) for a sea-perch underwater robotics project; Lisa Sims (Woodlon Junior High) for a seven-continents library series; Allison Loveady (Wester High) for robotics materials; Lieutenant Colonel Mark Hart (Westerner High) for a model-rocket design and launch project; and others noted during the presentation.
Organizers said the program issued bonus grants this year and awarded a total of more than $4,600. Board members thanked the local chamber and sponsors for supporting classroom enrichment.
Ending: recipients and program partners were recognized at the meeting; staff and sponsors will coordinate disbursement and project implementation at the schools.
