The Foster City Planning Commission unanimously approved a use permit on April 16 for additions and deck work at 257 Surfbird Isle after staff presented the project and noted no neighbors had objected during the noticing period.
Mara Buangco, senior planner, described the proposal as approximately 430 square feet of first-floor sunroom additions, an expanded ground-floor deck (about 855 square feet total), and a new 311-square-foot second-floor balcony with transparent 3-foot windscreens. Buangco said the project meets R‑1 setbacks and lot-coverage requirements and that staff had requested a shadow simulation toward the nearest neighbor at 261 Surfbird Isle; the simulation showed shadowing largely contained on-site when sunlight is greatest between 8 and 9 a.m.
The property owner thanked staff for their assistance and said neighbors had approved the project; the owner noted tall trees and existing vegetation contribute to privacy. “All three neighbors have approved the project and mailed into the city planning department,” the owner said, asking that any additional correspondence be considered if presented to staff.
The commission moved, seconded and voted 5–0 to adopt the resolution approving the use permit and finding the project exempt from CEQA under the existing-facilities exception. The chair read appeal instructions and reminded the public of the 10-calendar-day appeal period.
