Belmont Parks & Rec outlines Centennial plans, event schedule and department programming

Parks & Recreation staff used the April 1 meeting to update the commission on Belmont’s yearlong centennial activities, upcoming events and recent department programs.
Staff described Centennial highlights including painted 'Happy Hydrants', ongoing utility-box art applications, a Centennial Stories podcast available on Spotify, and an online swag shop selling shirts ($25) and hats ($15). The department said the big Centennial Fest is scheduled for Saturday, Oct. 24 and will feature a parade, an afternoon event at Twin Pines and—contingent on sponsors and vendor availability—a nighttime drone show.
"This is the web page, belmont.gov/100years," staff said, noting contact information (centennial@belmont.gov) and that applications and volunteer sign-ups are posted on the city website.
Commissioners asked practical questions about distribution (patches, stickers, podcast platforms) and about parade logistics; staff said police are working on a route and that additional sponsorships are being sought to support a drone show. There was no formal vote related to Centennial planning on April 1.
Staff also reviewed recent department activity: a childcare fair, trail maintenance with Trail Center volunteers (about 21 volunteers), a BCLC spring fling, a teen wellness retreat (more than 100 youth attendees), and upcoming events including the Adaptive Eggventure (sold out) and a Barrett Open House. Summer program registration opens Friday; the new activity guide is in the mail and online.
Commissioners generally praised the department’s outreach and asked staff to consider multiple outreach times to broaden participation in future community events. Staff encouraged residents to email or sign up online for more information and volunteer opportunities.
The commission did not take action on Centennial items at the meeting; staff will continue planning and outreach work and return to the commission with updates as needed.
