Roselle students bring home Battle of the Books trophy and demonstrate STEM projects at board meeting

The Roselle School District 12 Board of Education opened its March 16 meeting with student recognitions and demonstrations.
A Battle of the Books team from Roselle Middle School was introduced by Mr. Forrest after winning the traveling trophy at a Lake Park competition. Students Parker, Herbo, Elisa Game, Alina Manaya and Kedzie Brooke described the competition format (teams prepared about 20 titles, tiebreakers and author-identification points) and received applause from trustees.
Later, eighth-grade STEM students Thor and Daray — with teacher Mr. Forrest — demonstrated projects built using micro:bit devices and Microsoft MakeCode. Students described block-based coding that translated to JavaScript, sensors (pressure sensors, accelerometers), outputs (LEDs, servos), radio communication between micro:bits and applied projects including light-activated safety necklaces and an object dispenser.
Board members praised the students’ work and discussed possible future collaboration with Lake Park high-school programs. The recognitions and demonstrations were presented as part of the superintendent’s report and aim to highlight student engagement in clubs and electives.
