Ocoee fire chief outlines AED rollout and monitoring for city parks

Fire Chief Smothers told the commission on May 5 that the city has installed AED cabinets and wall‑mounted AEDs across several parks and city buildings and plans additional installations as equipment and power access allow.
Smothers recapped that Parent HeartWatch donated five AEDs last year and that staff placed units at Wellness Park, Central Park, Jim Beach Soccer Field, Freedom Park and Prairie Lake Park. He said AED cabinets and stands are monitored so staff receive alerts if a cabinet is opened or an AED is removed. The devices are integrated into quarterly physical checks and replacement cycles; the city budgets to replace about 10 AEDs yearly and staff are preparing a grant application to secure additional units.
The chief said the next wall‑mounted AED will be installed at Forest Lake Golf Club and that six parks currently lack an outdoor secured AED (Unity Park, Vignetti Park though one unit exists inside a fitness room, Coventry Park, Sorensen Park and Montgomery Park). He noted installation requires electrical access and vandal‑deterrent security for outdoor cabinets.
Commissioners thanked donors and staff for progress and noted plans to continue expanding coverage.
