Parks & Rec approves July meeting date; reviews Happy Hydrant designs and event schedule

At its Wednesday meeting the Belmont Parks & Recreation Commission set its combined summer meeting date, reviewed public-art selections for the Happy Hydrant program and received a run-through of recent and upcoming department events.

Commissioner [mover] moved to set the July combined meeting for July 22; the motion was seconded and passed unanimously (vote recorded as 5‑0). Staff described the Happy Hydrant selection process: submissions are accepted on a rolling basis, the committee highlighted favorites (including a youth-submitted design) and recommended historic themes for utility‑box artwork in the centennial year. Staff said remaining hydrants and some utility‑box slots are still available and that artists who were not selected have been notified and may revise and resubmit.

Staff also summarized recent community programs: the third annual adaptive adventure hunt held in early April had about 30 youth participants and included sensory-friendly activities and two golden eggs; the traditional egg hunt and Barrett open house followed; Movies in the Park returns this fall with a public survey to choose films; summer enrollment and camps are open and some senior trip spots remain; and a doubles pickleball tournament is scheduled for June 8.

Commissioners asked logistical questions about staffing for bike-safety energizer stations, court reservation glitches, and prize details for the pickleball tournament; staff said public‑works and public‑safety staff will support energizer stations and that registration and waiver procedures run through the city’s Activenet registration site.

The meeting concluded with commissioners asking staff to follow up on Oak Knoll land-ownership questions; the commission adjourned without additional votes.
