Mayor Jonathan McCollum read three proclamations recognizing International Firefighters Day (May 4), Mental Health Awareness Month (May 2026) and Bike Week (May 11–17, 2026).
On the mental health proclamation, Rachel Bryant, who identified herself as president of the local Zeta Phi Beta chapter, urged the community to normalize conversations about mental wellness and to seek help when needed: "Mental health is just as important as physical health as it shapes how we think, feel, and show up in our communities." Bryant introduced Dr. Jamita Cobb and Celeste Jackson as members of the group accompanying her.
Lisa Leaghey, chair of the Green River Commission, presented events tied to Bike Week and emphasized alternative transportation and safety. Leaghey asked residents to participate in Bike to Work Day on Friday and a community ride Saturday starting at Five Points and using the SMS Greenway: "So show up at 10AM, and we'll take a a ride down and back." She also noted local trails and a growing city network of routes supporting cycling as transport and recreation.
Mayor McCollum opened the proclamations to brief recognition comments and encouraged residents to support firefighters, mental-health access and cycling safety. Council members and staff also announced civic events including a budget work session on May 12 and a First Flight event at the airport on May 16.
Next steps: community groups and city staff will proceed with planned events and outreach during the month; proclamations serve as formal recognition but do not create new funding or legal obligations.
