WABASH, Ind.
The Wabash City Schools Board of Education on May 4 approved a package of operational and personnel items, including replacement of district mowers with a plan to hire a seasonal employee, issuance of an American Express purchasing card for a staff chaperone on a Japan trip, multiple transfers and hires across buildings, summer school staffing, and temporary pay for two IT staff to complete a one-on-one device refresh.
Equipment and services: Administration reviewed three outside mowing proposals and compared those costs with replacing district mowers and hiring a seasonal worker. The district estimated roughly $125,000 in savings over a 10-year period if it replaces equipment and uses a seasonal employee; the board approved moving forward with quotes and hiring a seasonal employee and approved the motion by voice vote.
Personnel and contracts: The board approved multiple staffing items: transferring Miss Inman into a gym/PLTW teaching paraprofessional role effective April 27; moving Kelly Springer into a shared high ability/RTI position for 2026-27 funded by a high ability grant and Title funds; approving Natasha Whitney for WMHS PCAP math and related classes and Ben Becker as WMHS business teacher for 2026-27; hiring Missy Eppley as a long-term math substitute (15 days at substitute pay, then first-year teacher pay); reducing Mr. Bagley's contract to three teaching periods for 2026-27 because of low enrollment in art; canceling a probationary contract for a sixth-grade language-arts teacher; and approving Sierra Tresca as a sixth-grade ELA teacher for 2026-27 (pending licensure requirements or an emergency permit).
Athletics and trips: The board approved an overnight boys basketball trip to a Division I camp at Purdue University Northwest; approved cheer and volleyball coaching rosters and summer help; and approved driving instructors for behind-the-wheel training at $25 per hour. It also approved up to two bus drivers for OJ summer remediation transportation at $96 per day, to be finalized once enrollment is set.
Technology: The board approved one extra week (40 hours) of pay for two district technology staff members to prepare and inventory devices (laptops and incoming iPads) and to set up student devices for the new school year.
Board action: All items in this roundup were approved by voice votes during the May 4 meeting. Administrators said specific postings and scheduling steps will be made in the coming weeks and that some items (insurance continuation for the superintendent, exact summer bus needs) will return as agenda items.
