The commission then considered leadership nominations: a motion to appoint Vice Chair Whitmore as Chair carried on a 7‑0 roll‑call vote, and a separate motion to appoint Anam Eyed Scott as Vice Chair likewise passed 7‑0.
The commission next reviewed the Happy Hydrant Centennial Art Project. Staff said one recent submission contained a logo and therefore did not meet application rules; a second submission — a rainbow coloring design — received mixed feedback from the review committee but enough support to recommend it to the commission. ‘‘Belmont is a different place than it was in 1976, and I think the arts can take on many shapes and colors and themes,’’ staff said while presenting the design. After discussion and a request to display the image from the packet, a commissioner moved to approve the design. The motion passed on a 7‑0 roll‑call vote.
Following the hydrant vote, staff reminded potential volunteers that paint can be expensive and asked that residents check with the department before buying materials for a hydrant project. No legal or budgetary approvals tied to the hydrant vote were reported at the meeting; staff said they were still awaiting formal confirmation from Midpen for any work on land under their jurisdiction.
