Sterling Heights City Council introduced an ordinance to update penalties and enforcement authority for commercial motor vehicles and seasonal weight limits, and heard a detailed presentation from Police Chief Andrew Satterfield on stepped-up traffic enforcement.
Chief Satterfield said the department has expanded traffic resources, increased stops and citations, and launched specialized teams for OWI enforcement and commercial motor-vehicle inspections. He described plans for directed patrols, a commercial motor-vehicle unit and a seasonal enforcement approach for frost-cycle weight restrictions. "Our traffic bureau staff has increased 50%, which is already showing production," Satterfield said.
Satterfield and Sergeant King described practical enforcement steps for identifying overweight trucks, including visual indicators and targeted stops based on reasonable suspicion. Sergeant King said the city will use online posting and signage for seasonal weight restrictions and coordinate training with neighboring jurisdictions to ensure enforcement accuracy.
Assistant City Attorney Don Denault said the ordinance updates penalties so they align with state and federal requirements and avoid conflicts that complicate court processing. Council introduced the ordinance package; staff said a fuller, consolidated motor-carrier update will be presented later.
