The proclamation recited national and state waiting-list figures cited by the council and encouraged residents to register to be donors through the California Donate Life registry and through the DMV. The proclamation noted that more than 100,000 individuals nationwide and more than 20,000 in California are on transplant waiting lists and cited a commonly used statistic that a single donor can save up to eight lives.
Robert Ralston told the council he had been on the transplant waiting list for about three years before receiving a life-saving phone call and expressed gratitude to his donor family. "My life was saved by the grace of God, miracles of modern medicine, and a man from Tennessee and his donor family," Ralston said, later urging residents to sign up: "By raising awareness, by being here tonight, we can change all that."
The proclamation and remarks included details about local remembrance activities: the Donate Life flag will fly at 13 local fire stations during April and proclamations will be displayed at a remembrance garden honoring donors.
The council thanked Ralston and noted upcoming related events, including a 5K run/walk and remembrance activities.
