School system seeks millions to complete long-delayed Chocticon renovation; county weighs two funding options

Kim Howe, representing the St. Mary's County Public School System, told commissioners May 5 that the district has been planning a multisystem renovation for Chocticon since fiscal 2019 and that 52% of the building sits in a section built in 1964.
Howe said the district has assembled roughly $33.06 million in state funding (including Healthy Schools and Built to Learn allocations) and $27.6 million in local funding, yielding a base project budget of $60,746,503. After bids opened April 22, three prequalified contractors submitted proposals that exceeded available funding because of market pressures and reductions in some state allocations.
