KCES fourth-grade math team places first in Northwest region; student demonstrates problem solving

The Knox Community School Corp. board on May 4 recognized a fourth-grade math team from Knox Community Elementary School (KCES) after the students placed first in the Northwest region competition and finished 28th out of 70 teams statewide.
Coach Mr. McCann and the team members attended the meeting for a champion moment. The coach and principal highlighted the students' behavior and preparation; the board applauded their accomplishments. Student Walker Lawrence explained one of the competition problems and described the steps he used to solve it, walking trustees through calculating the discount and coupon on a hypothetical $250 bike.
The district's presentation emphasized teamwork, practice during recess and after school and the educational value of exposing students to questions beyond their grade level. Trustees congratulated the students and encouraged them to continue promoting math among their peers.
The board received the presentation as an acknowledgment item; no action was required.
