The Washington Unified School District board approved Board Policy 1445 and accompanying Administrative Regulation (second read) setting procedures for responses to immigration enforcement requests involving students, families and district employees.
Student Services Director Dr. Jay Burns presented the policy and regulation, saying the material clarifies staff responsibilities: district staff must consult the superintendent or designated authority, verify officers’ identification and obtain documentation before authorizing requests for student access or entry to district property, and seek legal counsel where appropriate. The policy prohibits discrimination based on immigration status and states the district will notify parents and guardians that student information will not be shared with immigration enforcement unless legally required or with consent.
"District staff are instructed to deny information requests unless they meet specific criteria," Burns said, noting the administrative regulation provides more detailed operational steps and will guide staff training. Trustees also emphasized that training has been provided since the fall and that the policy formalizes practices already in place. The board approved the policy and AR on a unanimous voice vote.
Trustees discussed coordinating with city officials and sharing the policy publicly so families and community partners understand protections and reporting procedures.
