Delta County approves airport restructuring and sets new salaries for three positions

Commissioners voted to accept revised job descriptions for the airport manager, the airfield operations manager and an airport business coordinator. The board set the airport manager’s salary at $78,001.45, the airfield operations manager’s base salary at $65,000 and the airport business coordinator’s salary at $49,647 (37.5 hours per week, nonexempt). The votes were taken by voice and passed.
Commissioners said the restructuring moved faster than planned after an email from the Federal Aviation Administration prompted administrators to accelerate the work. A staff member noted the change in timing and said the airport manager projects about $40,000 in additional revenue over the next year that could reduce an existing shortfall.
“An email from the FAA sped up the process,” the staff member said, explaining why job descriptions and pay recommendations arrived sooner than expected. Commissioner who moved the manager’s salary reduction said the board intended a $10,000 cut from the previously reported figure and amended the motion to set the final salary at the stated number.
The board discussed timing and implementation: the salary adjustments will take effect when the newly restructured positions are filled and the current staff assignments are transitioned. Commissioners also voted to accept an updated job description for an airport operations manager and to authorize filling the airport operations specialist position after accepting a resignation earlier in the meeting.
The actions are intended to split operational duties, allow the airport manager to focus on revenue-generating opportunities and clarify the difference between managerial and operations roles. Board members said they expect the staffing changes to support better operations and clearer delineation of responsibilities as the airport pursues revenue opportunities.
