Parks and Recreation staff used the commission meeting to provide department updates tied to the city's centennial and upcoming programming.
Staff recapped the recent Santa at the Firehouse event and said community members donated toys and enjoyed the celebration. Staff reported completion of several 'happy hydrant' art installations and announced that applications for utility-box and hydrant art are open on the Centennial web page. The department also said summer job postings (camp counselors, pool managers, lifeguards and swim instructors) are live and that application deadlines vary, with most closing in February.
As part of centennial activities, staff said a Centennial swag shop is live and podcasts telling local histories will be uploaded; the department plans a model of the historic Belmont School for Boys to display in City Hall, a parade and a walking tour. Staff described a community-driven goal of organizing "100 celebrations" across the year: events can be public or private neighborhood gatherings for which the city will provide limited swag or small funding on request.
Staff encouraged commissioners and residents to submit event ideas and use the online form if they need small amounts of funding. The department said podcasts and archival audio are being uploaded and that more interviews and events are planned for the year.
Next steps: staff will continue to recruit for summer positions, process art and event applications, and schedule Centennial events through the year.
