The Carmel Board of Public Works on May 6 approved reaffiliation agreements allowing high‑school EMT students from Carmel Clay Schools and Hamilton Southeastern Schools to ride on Carmel Fire Department ambulances to gain 9‑1‑1 clinical experience.
Chief Joel Thacker said the Carmel High School EMT program has about 15 students this year and that the Hamilton Southeastern program has an estimated 30 to 35 interested students. "It gets them 9‑1‑1 experience," Thacker said, adding the arrangement helps students assess career interests and provides recruitment opportunities for the fire department.
Thacker said the program gives students exposure to emergency medical work in an operational setting rather than a private ambulance or hospital transfer vehicle. He described the affiliation as both a training opportunity for students and a way for the department to identify potential future hires.
Board members moved and approved both affiliation agreements by voice vote. The Hamilton Southeastern agreement will require coordination with neighboring departments that currently limit ride‑along participation, Thacker said; he noted staff will work with counterparts to address logistical concerns.
