Matthews students earn placements in area and All-Virginia bands; art contest winners recognized

The Matthews County School Board highlighted recent student accomplishments during its March 17 meeting, recognizing music and visual-arts achievements and a student research project.
Music director Mark Given reported numerous students qualifying for junior and senior area bands and six students making all-district bands. He singled out Hunter Owens, who qualified as first chair contraalto clarinet in the All-Virginia auditions and will travel to Richmond April 16–18 to perform with the All-Virginia Symphonic Band.
Art teacher Rachel Morris presented winners of the Matthews 250 poster contest: Nolan Swan (first place), Ellie Congrove (second) and Marley Brock (third). The 30 selected student pieces are on display at the county courthouse library and online.
The board also heard from students and a board member on Chesapeake Bay Governor's School projects; one student described building and deploying a tidal sensor that produced statistically significant data useful for local tidal flooding monitoring.
Board members and audience members applauded the students and presented certificates; administrators encouraged community attendance at forthcoming performances and displays.
