The Freeburg CCSD 70 Board of Education approved its consent agenda and a slate of routine business items at its March meeting, including a corrected 2026–2027 district calendar, renewal of a bus lease and a series of personnel actions.
The board voted to approve the consent agenda, which included minutes from the Feb. 23, 2026 regular meeting, the budget summary through Feb. 28, 2026 and the investment summary through March 20, 2026. Mr. Me moved the motion and Miss Shook seconded; the voice vote passed as announced by the chair.
The board reviewed bills listed in a shared folder and approved payment. The chair called out a law-firm invoice related to a facilities lawsuit, a Frontline Technologies annual subscription for staff services, and a deposit to Johnson Controls for summer HVAC/system work; members approved the bills by roll call.
The board rescinded and then approved a revised 2026–2027 district calendar to correct spring-break dates, moving spring break to before Easter. The board also approved changing the May board meeting from May 25 to May 18 at the usual start time.
On transportation, the board renewed a bus lease with a neighboring district identified in the meeting as "St. Labor District 30" for the 2026–2027 school year. The presenter said the district has leased an extra bus to that district for several years and charges cover transportation costs; the lease renewal was approved by roll call.
Personnel actions included acceptance of a resignation from head baseball coach Chris Smith, who is taking on the transportation director role next year, and acceptance of a retirement from transportation supervisor Fritz Hulcom. The board also accepted resignations from girls cross-country/head girls basketball coach Mark Derart, assistant boys basketball coach Kevin Lis and athletic director Harry Green. Motions to accept those letters were moved, seconded and carried as announced by the chair.
The board voted to employ Claire Walker as the eighth-grade social studies teacher for the 2026–2027 school year; Walker had been serving as the interim for Ben Young. The motion passed on roll call with the members present voting in favor.
Before moving into closed session to consider additional personnel and compensation matters, the board held a brief discussion about a previously raised proposal to permit district employees to enroll their children tuition-free. Superintendent remarks provided preliminary estimates that the policy would add approximately seven students in year one and roughly 14 students across four years, but the presenter cautioned those figures are approximate and subject to change.
The meeting moved to closed session on a motion by Mr. May and adjourned following the announced votes.
