WIAA approves Viroqua's move to the Southwest Conference for most sports beginning 2027–28

The Viroqua Area School District was told the Wisconsin Interscholastic Athletic Association approved the conference realignment recommendation that will place Viroqua in the Southwest Conference for several sports beginning in the 2027–28 school year.
Athletics director Dan summarized winter-spring sports results and said overall high-school winter-sports participation rose about 15 percent compared with 2024–25. He said the approved move covers basketball, wrestling, cross country and track and field but does not include football, boys golf, boys hockey, boys tennis, girls golf, gymnastics or girls tennis at this time. Dan told the board the Southwest Conference is enthusiastic about Viroqua joining and that some sports will remain in current co-op arrangements where the partner school is the lead.
Board members asked whether co-op arrangements could affect conference placement; Dan explained conference commissioners and the lead school in co-ops play a role in approval and renewals. He also noted football and lacrosse operate on a different application cycle and could be considered separately in the future.
No formal board vote was recorded on the realignment at the meeting; the WIAA's approval, Dan said, is the determinative action and the district will plan accordingly for scheduling, travel and co-op renewals.
