Huntsville City Schools approved a one‑year memorandum of understanding with Michigan State University and Alabama A&M University on May 5 to participate in a Department of Education‑funded chemistry and physics enrichment program.
Staff said Michigan State wrote the federal grant and Alabama A&M was awarded the state role; both institutions toured Huntsville schools and proposed a program to bring equipment, teacher training and modules to all district high schools. Teachers selected for the summer training will attend a three‑day program, receive instructional modules and equipment for classroom use, and teachers will receive a stipend of $750 while principals who help schedule and support the program will receive $500, staff said.
The MOU is one year and is presented as a pilot to study student engagement and instructional effectiveness in physics and chemistry across district high schools. Board members voted to approve the agreement on a voice vote during the meeting.
What’s next: staff will proceed with training schedules and deployment of equipment this summer and will monitor the pilot’s effectiveness.
