Board approves renaming auxiliary gym and $24,904 network work to support security and access control

The Taos Municipal Schools board approved two facility items on May 6: the formal renaming of the Taos High School auxiliary gym to the "Dan Dan Barone Wrestling and Training Facility" and a $24,904.18 contract for network infrastructure, configuration, equipment and installation to connect the new facility to the district network.

Superintendent Layton summarized the naming committee’s meetings and said the board had reviewed public input during the required two‑meeting process before bringing a final recommendation. A board motion to adopt the Dan Dan Barone name passed on a voice/roll call vote.

The board then considered a contract presented by Director of IT and Communications Maria Gentet to provide network cabling, configuration and integration so the auxiliary gym can support cameras and access control in the future. Gentet said the work "lays the foundation" for security cameras and access control doors; board members asked for procurement documentation to demonstrate best value since the vendor is on a state contract (CES) and some pages in the packet did not include a signed contract cover page. The superintendent clarified the contract cover page will be signed after board approval rather than prior to it.

With the requested procurement clarifications noted, a motion to approve the $24,904.18 network work passed by roll call with the members present voting in the affirmative. The board instructed IT and procurement to retain supporting documentation showing the selection and pricing rationale and to have the contract signed after approval.

Both facility items were approved during the meeting’s regular business session; no amendments to either motion were made on the floor.
