The Taos Municipal Schools Board of Education on May 6 recognized student nutrition staff, principals and named campus and district Teachers of the Year.
Superintendent Doctor Layton read biographical profiles for multiple campus winners and announced the district selections, saying he was "very proud to announce" Christine Martinez as district elementary teacher of the year and Ben Ogren as district secondary teacher of the year. Individual campus winners named in the presentation included Sonia Romero (Royal Del Norte Elementary), Erica Dela Osa (Enos Garcia Elementary), Christine Martinez (Ranchos Elementary) and Ben Ogren (Taos Middle School); Taos High School honored Demet (David/Debit) Sanchez as high‑school teacher of the year.
The meeting also included a "school lunch hero" appreciation segment. The board presented certificates to nutrition staff and recognized work to increase scratch‑made meal offerings after a recent training; the nutrition director highlighted new breakfast items such as overnight oats, muffins and parfaits introduced across campuses. Board members thanked staff for their service and noted the central role nutrition workers play in supporting students.
The recognitions were given at the start of the board’s regular meeting and were followed by the consent agenda and other business. The board took no substantive policy votes tied to the awards beyond the ceremonial acknowledgments.
Looking ahead, the district plans to continue the in‑meeting recognitions and requested that board members review written campus reports circulated for further detail on local programs and achievements.
