Students mark Constitution Day; Chico Unified honors longtime educators

Fifth-grade students from Little Chico Creek recited the Preamble to the U.S. Constitution at the Sept. 17 Chico Unified School District board meeting to mark Constitution Day.
"We the people of the United States of America … establish justice, ensure the domestic tranquility, provide for the common defense, promote the general welfare and secure the blessings of liberty to ourselves and our posterity," the students recited together, earning applause from the audience.
Principal Kristen Shock introduced the students and noted fifth graders have been studying the Constitution in the weeks leading up to the observance. The board also used the meeting to recognize longtime educators: Principal Kristen Shock presented a superintendent award to a veteran teacher, Mr. Bart Can, who has served at Little Chico Creek for decades, and Jess Crane and Melinda McCaulay recognized PAR educator Chrissy/Christy Zala for more than 30 years of service.
Board members and union representatives also used the announcements portion of the meeting to thank classified staff, introduce a member-of-the-month and note National IT Professionals Day.
