Carpinteria Unified board adopts bylaw update, approves CommonLit pilot, tech purchases and First Five grant

The Carpinteria Unified School District Board of Education on July 8 adopted an update to bylaw 9320 (meetings and notices) and approved a package of classroom and technology purchases, plus a $30,000 grant to build an early-learning outdoor TK classroom at Aliso.
On second reading the board approved the updated bylaw 9320, which staff said clarifies when a board meeting exists and how notices are handled. The motion to adopt was moved and seconded on the record and the board voted to approve the change.
In education business, the board approved a one-year pilot of CommonLit 360 for Carpinteria High School and Carpinteria Middle School. The district reported a $6,500 cost per school — $13,000 total — to be paid from restricted lottery funds. Board members said teachers are interested in the curriculum and that piloting it could provide a cohesive ELA pathway from middle to high school.
Under business and operations the board approved routine warrants and separate technology purchases: a request to buy 160 Chromebooks for incoming ninth-graders and replacements (the transcript records the cost string as '42,56053' — formatting in the audio transcript is unclear) and a purchase of 10 iPads and 10 MacBooks for incoming teachers at a cost reported as $15,382.70 to be paid from general funds.
