Imperial Beach proclaims March as National Reading Month and Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month

The Imperial Beach City Council on March 18 approved two proclamations honoring community literacy and disability awareness. Councilmember Nakawadise read a proclamation recognizing March 2026 as National Reading Month; Nicole Ortega, branch manager of the Imperial Beach Library, described county-library resources and programs and urged residents to visit local branches and digital collections.
Mayor Pro Tem Fisher read a proclamation recognizing Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month in March, and Edward Hershey, CEO and president of Home of Guiding Hands, thanked the council and described the importance of inclusion and community supports for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities.
Both proclamations were moved, seconded and approved unanimously; council members paused afterward for photographs with award recipients and presenters.
"Reading connects us and helps make us stronger as a society," Nicole Ortega said; Edward Hershey noted the importance of inclusion and community partnerships for longtime progress in services.
