Council reaction and fiscal concerns
Council members expressed broad support for the program’s goals and effectiveness but worried about the long‑term sustainability of temporary draw‑down funding. Multiple council members urged staff to seek additional grants, public‑private partnerships and other local funding to cover any gap in future years; staff said the contract contains a 180‑day opt‑out provision and they will present refined contract language before a formal vote.
Next steps: Council gave staff direction to finalize contract language, pursue outside funding and return with options. Several council members signaled informal consensus to continue the program for a year to allow time for funding and partnership work, with the chief reporting back to the council within 12 months with program data and additional funding proposals.
