The Grimes City Council voted Feb. 10 to approve a rental agreement for an Amateur Athletic Union (AAU) football tournament at the Ivy Multiplex, authorizing staff to finalize the event scheduled for July 30–Aug. 1, 2026.
Brian Becker, identified at the meeting as parks and recreation director, told the council staff recommends approval of resolution 02-1626. Becker said the event is expected to bring roughly 2,400 athletes, about 415 coaches and a schedule of approximately 1,200 games, with teams coming from 29 states and 24 countries. He said the city’s projected revenue from the event is “a little over $48,000.”
Councilmembers asked about public-safety and ambulatory resources for a large weekend event; staff said fire and police have been consulted and an emergency plan is in place. Council discussion highlighted the event’s economic-development benefits: staff and council noted the city is coordinating with a local hotel to act as a host property and that local restaurants and businesses have been alerted to potential increased demand.
The council moved and seconded the resolution and approved it by roll call. No ordinance or additional council conditions were announced at the meeting. The action allows staff to proceed with final contract arrangements and event coordination with public-safety partners.
