Nonprofit Every Step asks Clive for $10,000 to sustain Healthy Homes program as HUD grant ends

Trey Wade, president and CEO of Every Step, told the Clive City Council on Jan. 8 that the nonprofit’s Healthy Homes program has shown measurable health benefits and now faces a funding gap as a four‑year HUD grant comes to an end Sept. 1. Wade said Every Step serves roughly 45,000 people a year across the region and is seeking municipal partners to sustain the program’s assessment, education and targeted home‑safety upgrades.
“Healthy Homes is dedicated toward making sure that people can stay in their homes, that they have a livable environment … specifically for older adults and young kids,” Wade said in the council chamber.
Molly Gosling, vice president of community health, summarized program outcomes from earlier HUD‑funded work: reductions in asthma‑related emergency‑room visits, more symptom‑free days for children and fewer missed school and work days for families. Gosling said the organization hopes to serve about 300 families across Polk County under the proposed model and estimated the budget for the program at $261,925, including staff, mileage, interpretation and supplies.
Every Step asked Clive to be part of the funding mix as a city in the 0–25,000 population band, requesting $10,000 from the city’s budget. Council members pressed staff and the presenters for local detail: Council Member Eric asked how many Clive families the program serves and asked Every Step to provide that count to City Manager Matt McQuillin. Council Member Ted encouraged the presenters to pursue public‑private partnerships, including realtor philanthropy and other grant sources.
On the federal funding outlook, presenters said HUD has not yet announced a new funding round and that Every Step has been in regular contact with congressional staff to advocate for continued support. The presenters invited follow‑up meetings and said they would email Clive staff with Clive‑specific referral and caseload data.
The council did not take an immediate funding vote but directed staff to consider Every Step’s request during the budget process and to evaluate whether the program fits regional housing and social‑service strategies.
