The Boulder City Historic Preservation Commission voted March 25 to recommend that city council approve local designation of the World War II monument and memorial flag pole at Robert Broadbent Memorial Park (1305 Fifth Street).
Staff and consultant Courtney Mooney presented research showing the memorial meets local code criteria—including association with local historic events and its role as a familiar visual feature of the city—and explained why SHIPO recommended local rather than state designation. Commissioners discussed the structure’s condition, whether planned pool construction would affect the monument and whether replacing components (such as the concrete base) or relocating the memorial would affect its integrity. Mooney explained that replacing one component is only part of the integrity analysis and that preservation decisions weigh setting, materials and workmanship together.
The commission opened public comment for the agenda item (none were received) and then moved to recommend the nomination to city council. On a motion and second, commissioners voted in favor of the recommendation.
