"By intentionally creating spaces for students to speak, lead and advocate, we are hoping that they will develop confidence and self‑advocacy skills that will serve them in college, career, and life," Dr. Castro said. Students and mentors described mentorship as "having someone to help guide me" and a relationship that "opens my heart to different kids and experiences." Board members praised the program and discussed plans to expand it.
The board also recognized Cerritos High School's national champions in song/pom and its CIF Southern Section individual wrestling champions. Coach Casey Brickner and principal Dr. Christina Weise were acknowledged; student athletes and coaches described the hours and preparation that led to national and sectional titles.
What happens next: Staff said LCAP stories and program videos are posted on the district website and YouTube channel for community access; the district plans to expand mentoring supports next year as sixth graders transition to middle school.
