Council receives Alpena Wildlife Sanctuary Board annual report on Island Park stewardship

Amber Hubard, a member of the Alpena Wildlife Sanctuary Board, presented the board’s annual report summarizing stewardship work on Island Park for Feb. 2025–Feb. 2026. The report, prepared under the 1985 agreement with the Michigan Land Trust Fund, detailed trail inspections and debris removal after an ice storm, installation of boot-cleaning stations, turtle-nest protection cages, volunteer invasive-species removal, and educational outreach including the Island Park Explorer program for elementary students.
Amber listed current board membership and noted two open board positions being posted to fill three-year terms. Board accomplishments included habitat restoration work with Heron Pine staff, a Magic in Our Midst children’s event, and distribution of educational pamphlets to area visitor centers and MDOT welcome centers. Council moved to receive and file the report; the motion was seconded and council confirmed receipt. A council member requested a copy of the more extensive report she had heard read aloud.
Next steps: staff to provide a copy of the more extensive report to the requesting council member; two board vacancies will be posted.
