According to the presentation, about 90% of Youth Services shelter residents attend public school; the presenter said one youth has graduated from high school and several others are employed. The detention center average stay was reported as about 19 days (an average that masks a range of stays, including some cases lasting months due to serious felony charges and ongoing legal processes). The presenter said the county obtained a grant that funds continued access to drug and alcohol services and mental health care for detained youth, noting the Kansas Department of Corrections stops honoring medical cards after the first month of detention.
Staff also reported workforce and hiring progress: two full-time shelter positions remained open but offers were pending for at least one role (a cook). Commissioners thanked staff for the detailed packet and the work with youth and staff celebrated as employee-of-the-year recognition to follow at a later event.
No questions required additional action at the meeting; commissioners encouraged staff to pass appreciation along to the Youth Services teams.
