Weldon board adopts 2026–27 calendar, citing construction timing

The Weldon City Schools Board of Education voted to adopt the district's 2026–27 calendar during its regular meeting, selecting the option that places the first required teacher work day and first student day later in August to better align with ongoing construction at the new school.

Why it matters: Officials said the chosen schedule reduces the risk of opening school before construction substantially completes and preserves evenly distributed instructional days for testing. The board noted an April 1 statutory deadline to report the local calendar to the State Board of Education.

Board members discussed two calendar options presented in the meeting packet. Administration recommended choosing a calendar that would allow time for construction contingencies and, if needed, amending the calendar later rather than adopting an option that might force short-term changes. After discussion, a board member moved to approve “Option One”; the motion was seconded and passed by voice vote. Meeting minutes record the motion carried; no roll-call tally was read aloud at the meeting.

District staff said they will place contingency planning for move-in and school startup on the March 30 work session agenda so the board can act if the building certificate is later than expected. The board also discussed coordination with the district’s early-college program, noting the need to avoid dropping students from college classes if their start dates differ from the district calendar.
