City manager describes water-main repair, pending grants and revamped CIP work

City Manager Tyler Dodson told the Hudsonville City Commission the corporate Grove Drive water-main valve issue was repaired and staff are preparing follow-up work to prevent similar failures. He emphasized coordinating road projects and utility work to avoid repeated excavation of recently paved streets.

Dodson said the city has received a $430,000 recommendation from the Michigan Department of Natural Resources that still must be budgeted and routed through the state budget process; if approved in the governor’s budget and the legislature, funds would likely be available in late September or early October and cannot be spent until formally awarded and budgeted.

He described ongoing efforts to improve capital improvement planning (CIP), including new software and closer collaboration with intergovernmental partners that provide water and sewer treatment. Dodson said better pre-planning will let the city combine road resurfacing with utility replacements where appropriate, realizing economies of scale and avoiding repeated disruption.

Staff also highlighted a federal Office of Highway Safety Planning grant application to obtain an attenuated traffic control vehicle for roadside incidents and events; the application is being finalized with submission imminent and staff will report back on the award status.

Dodson said department head budgets are under review and collective bargaining with SEIU public works staff will begin this month; he also mentioned upcoming bonding and a scheduled series of budget meetings. He closed by noting a workshop will present highlights of a library feasibility study and next steps for community engagement.
