Kurt Tisquitz, assistant superintendent for student services for Plymouth-Canton Community Schools, said the district received 723 applications for 500 available seats in the district’s 2026–27 school-of-choice program and that 99 applicants with siblings already enrolled in the program will automatically receive seats.
The lottery, streamed live, assigns each applicant a placement number used to offer seats by grade level. "We had 723 total applications for 500 seats," Tisquitz said. He explained the number is a placement rank, not a guaranteed seat: "It's really more of a placement number where we will use that placement number to offer seats to students based on available seats in our K through 10 program." The district is accepting students in kindergarten through 10th grade; kindergarten includes Young Fives.
Under the district's board resolution to accept 500 students, 99 sibling-preference slots reduce the immediate pool to 401 seats available for the remaining applicants. Tisquitz said that, after accounting for sibling preference, there were 624 applications competing for those 401 seats. Parents and guardians who applied will receive an email with each applicant’s lottery number and grade placement; Tisquitz urged families to check their email the day after the draw for details.
Families will have five days after receiving a school placement email to accept or decline the offer. If a family does not respond within that five-day window, the district will move to its wait list. Tisquitz said the district maintains an approximate wait list of 520 students, which will be used by grade and placement number as openings occur. "Once you receive your number, we will be working to give your student a placement in a particular building," he said, adding that staff try to place students as close to home as possible when space is available.
Tisquitz apologized in advance for any mispronunciations during the rapid name draws and thanked technical staff running the live stream. He said results would be emailed "no later than tomorrow evening," and that the overall placement process would conclude by March 25.
The live stream concluded after staff recorded placement numbers for each applicant. Families with questions were directed to contact the department of student services via the district email address provided during the stream.
