Myers cited crash tolls discussed in the packet, saying the county had seen "73 deaths since 2019 and 345 crashes since then," and described a recent fatal e‑bike collision on Old Winterville Drive as emblematic of the need for safer options for low‑cost transportation.
Several commissioners emphasized that engineering, education and enforcement must all be part of the work. Commissioner Wright described personal family and constituent collisions as evidence of the harm caused by distracted driving and urged stronger enforcement and hands‑free policies; Commissioner Blake asked for more detail on enforcement tools and noted the need to address repeat impaired‑driver offenders. Commissioner Marcus and others said the plan provides clear recommendations and grant competitiveness; staff said the document will help target grants from $5 million to $30 million when matched.
Commissioners did not take a final vote on major implementation measures at the March 17 agenda session; staff and the commission discussed placing the Vision Zero plan on the consent agenda or returning it with a memo and suggested edits at a future meeting.
