District staff told the board that the insurance estimate for rebuilding the gym is about $2.6 million, while the district would receive roughly a $1.5–$1.6 million lump-sum payout if it chooses not to rebuild. Staff said the district’s $100,000 deductible applies and that the $38,000 brick order would be covered within the repair cash value if the board approves reconstruction. A staff member told the board, “The only action we're asking the board to take tonight is to authorize up to $38,000 to purchase the brick because we need to purchase it by next week so we can get it in in time to be on time with a potential construction schedule.”
Officials said the original brick manufacturer runs production about every six months; missing the current production run could delay rebuilding by months and increase costs because the contractor would face extended mobilization charges. Staff also noted the district could resell surplus brick if it ultimately chose not to rebuild, but that would leave the $38,000 as a sunk cost.
Board members were told the full construction contract and related documents will return to the board as an action item on April 16. On that date board members expect to consider deeming the Latonia project an emergency, approving the BG‑1 form that states the total contract amount, and awarding the contract to HGC Construction if they proceed.
The motion to authorize the brick purchase passed on a roll call vote with affirmative votes recorded; board members present also approved an earlier set of financial and consent items at the start of the meeting. The board moved into a closed executive session after the vote and did not anticipate taking action when it reconvened.
