The Southwestern board approved several donations and grants, including a $50,000 Project Lead The Way startup grant to create a biomedical sciences pathway at Southwestern High School. The grant will be paid in two installments of $25,000 over the next two years and will support new classes, including Principles of Biomedical Sciences and Medical Interventions, district staff said.
Board members accepted smaller community donations designated for the Spartan Food Pantry, FFA and an elementary clothing project (individual donations of $50, $50, $150, $278 and $350 were listed). Trustees voted to approve multiple out-of-state student trips, including the small engines team’s trip to the Mid‑America Trucking Show in Louisville on March 27 and music department travel to Kings Island (May 27) and an overnight performance trip tied to Indiana State and St. Louis.
The board also authorized payments to Tech Time Construction Management for plumbing and heating work on bond-funded projects ($12,511.83 and $20,300). Staff reported the bond-authorized program totals about $5.6 million and that roughly 19% of those funds have been spent; roofing work is complete and HVAC work — including controls work starting next week — is scheduled primarily for the summer months.
Board members noted that any leftover contingency funds from the bond must be used on building projects as originally authorized and cannot be moved into the education fund.
