Morgan Elementary showcases STEAM projects; board honors cafeteria manager on retirement

Morgan Elementary teachers and students presented a demonstration of the school’s STEAM (science, technology, engineering, art and math) program at the North Harrison Community School Corporation board meeting on March 12.
Teacher Josie Haley described the classroom’s use of Project Lead the Way curriculum and said STEAM “is a way students explore the world through hands-on learning.” She told the board the curriculum is vertically aligned with Indiana standards and emphasizes collaboration, problem solving and real-world applications across grade levels.
Students from Morgan Elementary — identified at the meeting as fifth graders Eva Yoko and Charlotte Weeks, second grader Evelyn Haley and third grader Meline Hutner — completed a timed pipe-cleaner building challenge in front of the board and described elements of their designs. The presentation included photos and a short video of in-class projects that staff said map to state science standards and help students demonstrate understanding through building and speaking rather than only written work.
The board also recognized cafeteria staff member Paula Powers on the occasion of her retirement. Presenters and board members noted Powers began working in North Harrison school cafeterias in 1994, later served as a cafeteria manager and was named food services coordinator in 2023; members thanked her for more than 30 years of service to district students.
Board members applauded the students and staff; the board adjourned at 7:54 p.m.
