McDowell County commissioners voted March 16 to approve a resolution supporting Via Healths application to lead a regional Roots Hub under the federal Rural Health Transformation Program.
Dustin Berles of Via Health told the board the RHTP, authorized through the HR1 reconciliation bill, provides one-time federal funding over five years to strengthen rural health access, quality and workforce. The program aggregates existing local resourceshospitals, federally qualified health centers, local public-health departments, behavioral-health providers, schools and community organizationsinto a regional network coordinated by a Roots Hub lead. Berles said the application deadline is April 2 and award decisions are expected by June 1.
"It's going to expand access where gaps already exist and focus on things like primary care, maternal and infant health, behavioral health and workforce development," Berles said. He said Via Health and Appalachian State plan to apply to serve multiple regions including region one, which includes McDowell County.
A commissioner moved to approve a resolution of support and the board adopted the resolution by voice vote. Commissioners discussed whether to provide a letter of support or commitment; Berles said Via Health may request letters and staff indicated they would supply them if asked.
No county financial commitment was requested at the meeting; the resolution is a statement of local support for the Roots Hub application and county staff will coordinate further documentation if Via Health requests it.
