Reno County approves purchase of new body-worn and in-car cameras and evidence platform for sheriff's office

The recommended solution from Motorola Solutions would supply 23 in-car cameras, 43 body-worn cameras and a cloud-based evidence platform with storage and DA sharing. The procurement discussion included five-year storage costs and retention requirements for felony arrests.
Meeting materials and comments referenced an initial quoted total and a motion placed a not-to-exceed ceiling on the acquisition. A commissioner noted the investment may avoid larger legal and settlement costs when evidence is incomplete; officials also said they would pursue available grants to offset costs.
The commission moved to authorize the IT director to complete the acquisition subject to required legal review and not to exceed $360,252.76; the motion passed unanimously by roll call.
What’s next: IT and the sheriff’s office will finalize procurement documents, implement the vendor solution and oversee migration of existing evidence into the new evidence-management platform. The purchase includes a multi-year storage contract to satisfy retention obligations.
Representative quote: “One of the largest things when we started going into body-worn cams... is unlimited data with Motorola to store our videos,” the sheriff’s representative said, explaining that retention and storage were integral to the contract.
Operational impact: County officials said the integrated system will reduce staff time required to locate and copy footage and improve the district attorney’s access to evidence for prosecution.
