Students present National History Day projects and VHS musical preview as board observes two student deaths

At its March 9 meeting, the Vermilion Local board heard National History Day presentations from seventh-graders, a preview of the VHS production of 'Grease' and observed a moment of silence for two recently deceased students.
Before routine business, the Vermilion Local Board of Education observed a moment of silence after a board member announced the deaths of recent graduate Lucy Hopkins and senior Paige Williams and offered condolences to their families.
The board then heard a National History Day presentation from Sailor Way seventh-graders introduced by Mrs. Dit. She described the district's National History Day projects under this year's theme, "revolution, reaction and reform," and told the board, "our first competition falls on spring break, March 20th." Students spoke briefly about their research and project formats (exhibit boards, documentaries or websites) and will take the projects to competition in late March.
Mrs. Jud, director of band and theater at Vermilion High School, previewed the spring musical, the school edition of 'Grease,' and invited the board and community to performances March 20–22. "We have close to 75 kids involved in both cast and crew," she said, and performed two musical numbers for those attending the meeting.
The student board member also reported on winter sports, noting two wrestlers advancing to state competition and highlighting individual athletes.
No members of the public spoke during the public participation portions of the agenda.
The meeting proceeded to the superintendent's and treasurer's reports and routine business later in the agenda.
