Board approves revised Apple lease and device buyback after product-price change

The Liberty Public Schools Board of Education approved a revised lease agreement with Apple and a buyback contract with Total Technology to replace and resell district laptops after a supplier change altered the original pricing.
Mr. Steve Anderson, director of operations, told the board that Apple informed districts that the planned M4 MacBook Air devices were being superseded by M5 models and that the vendor would not honor the earlier pricing. District staff evaluated alternatives, including a new smaller device, but recommended proceeding with the M5 lease to maintain functionality and device lifecycles. The revised lease increases per‑device cost; staff said the district negotiated lease terms and expects a competitive buyback value for the older units.
Anderson said the district negotiated a buyback proposal for the devices it will turn in this summer; staff presented an expected buyback amount in the range of $1.4 million that the district plans to apply toward first‑year lease payments and capital planning. The board approved the revised Apple lease and the Total Technology buyback contract by roll-call vote.
Board members asked about testing alternative devices and about service, warranty and the vendor’s role in device intake and setup. Mr. Anderson said the vendor handles device scrubbing and reimaging and will assist with intake and deployment work. No dissenting votes were recorded on the motion.
