Fairview students showcase music program as school leaders outline literacy, attendance and extracurricular goals

A presenter from Fairview said the school’s literacy leadership team, which includes two reading specialists and classroom teachers, meets regularly to support instruction and help teachers implement a newly adopted reading curriculum. The presenter said the district’s personalized reading plans are used for students who fall below a state benchmark; Fairview reported 13% of students on reading plans in the fall and 14% in the winter. “We have lots of different data points we look at to measure how kids are doing,” the presenter said, describing ongoing data meetings to adjust instruction.
On attendance, the presenter said the district set a chronic-absence goal of under 5% (chronically absent defined as missing about 10% of the school year) after a previous year rate of about 8%. The presenter said data crunching for this year shows an increase to 11%, and described several contributing factors — family moves, extended travel and new families adjusting to district practices — while noting targeted interventions are underway. The school described a student services team (principal, counselor, psychologist and social worker) that meets twice monthly to analyze cases and plan family outreach and tiered interventions.
Miss Jenna Erley, Fairview’s music teacher, introduced students who performed a short song and described classroom activities that build teamwork and basic music skills. A student performer explained classroom rhythm games and an obstacle-course activity that combined music questions with movement; the students invited the public to a concert on April 13 at the high school.
The presentation also summarized a districtwide extracurricular-family engagement survey, which the presenter said found 91% of families are involved in or plan to participate in extracurriculars; reported barriers included time, awareness of options and occasional cost. The presenter said the school will continue to monitor participation and send targeted outreach to families.
The presentation closed with a request for questions; none were raised, and the board proceeded to other agenda items.
